Only the Brave with Paul McDonald and Dustin Oprea

Coming up on the Men at the Movies podcast, I sit down with Dustin Oprea to talk about Only the Brave, a true story about the Granite Mountain Hotshots, wildfire firefighters from Arizona. We dwell on this line, “We don’t see things as they are. We see things as we are.” We only live to the identity we have received and we have embraced. How can this help us in our initiation and discipleship to become more like Jesus? Join us as we discover God’s truth in this movie.

Resources

  • “For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” - James 1:23-25 (NLT)

  • “Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing…God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” - James 1:2-4, 12 (NLT)

  • “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.” -Matthew 7:3-5 (NLT)
