Moana with Paul McDonald and Corey Stumne
Coming up on the Men at the Movies podcast, I discuss Moana with Corey Stumne. Brokenness comes in many forms. Tafiti had something sacred stolen from her. Maui was rejected by those whose acceptance he needed. Moana was broken by her failure. We have also been broken. Thankfully we have a savior who has crossed the horizon to find us, who knows who we are, and can give us our hearts back. What can I say except you’re welcome, and let’s discover God’s truth in this movie.
Quotes
Hurt people hurt people. Healed people heal people.
Repent isn’t changing your behavior, it’s changing your heart.
It’s not good enough just to play the game, God wants your heart.
Maui stole the heart of Tafiti in an effort to soothe his own wounds.
We use our talents and gifts as a way to soothe our brokenness.
In the brokenness of her failure, she threw away her identity.
It feels like who you are died when you failed.
If we pursue our calling without healing our brokenness.
God has not called us to a life of brokenness and despair, but one of healing and purpose.
The broken vessel becomes more valuable than the whole one.
Themes
Three characters who have been broken
Tafiti: Broken because she had something sacred stolen. She transforms from a beautiful garden island into an angry lava monster.
Maui: Broken because he was rejected by others. Consumed by striving to gain the acceptance he desperately needs. He helps to shape Moana even as he’s dealing with his own brokenness. Has to allow his heart to bend to the will of the mission. Doesn’t know who he is without his gifting. Tries to fix his brokenness in his own strength and power.
Moana: Broken by failure. She needs Maui to accomplish her calling. Her identity became wrapped up in success or failure.
You don’t need the best version of yourself, you need a new heart and new identity.

Know Who You Are lyrics
I have crossed the horizon to find you
I know your name
They have stolen the heart from inside you
But this does not define you
This is not who you are
You know who you are
Who I am in Christ document
